Mobile Dog Grooming vs. a Grooming Salon: An Honest Comparison
Is mobile grooming worth it? We compare mobile vans and grooming salons on stress, time, cost and safety, so you can choose what's right for your pet.

We run a mobile grooming service, so we're not neutral. But mobile grooming isn't the best choice for every dog and every family, and you deserve a straight answer. Here's how the two options actually compare.
How each one works
At a grooming salon, you drive your pet in, drop them off and pick them up later. Your pet is usually in the shop for several hours, and spends part of that time waiting in a crate between steps, often near other dogs.
With mobile grooming, a groomer arrives at your home in a van equipped for grooming, with a tub, a dryer and a grooming table. Your pet is groomed right outside your door, one-on-one, and is back inside as soon as they're done. At WeDoPetz you pick an arrival window, meet the groomer when they arrive, and can go back to your day while your pet is groomed.
Stress and anxiety
This is where mobile grooming makes the biggest difference. Many dogs and cats find the salon environment overwhelming: the car ride, barking, unfamiliar smells, dryers running and hours in a crate. In a van, there's one groomer, one pet and no waiting room. For anxious pets, senior pets and cats, that calmer setup is often the deciding factor.
It's not magic. A pet who dislikes being handled may still find grooming hard. But removing the crate time and the noise of other animals helps a lot of pets settle.
Your time
A salon visit usually means two trips: drop-off and pick-up, often within set hours. With mobile grooming there's no driving and no waiting. That matters most for busy families, people without a car, households with several pets, and anyone caring for a dog who's hard to lift into a vehicle.
Cost
Mobile grooming usually costs more per visit than a salon. You're paying for a dedicated groomer and a fully equipped van that comes to you. Whether it's worth it depends on what you value: if the salon saves money but costs you two drives and an anxious dog, the difference may be smaller than it looks.
Prices at WeDoPetz depend on your pet's size, coat and ZIP code, and you see the exact price before you pay. You can also save with a recurring plan or by booking ahead. See the current numbers on our pricing page.
Quality of the groom
The quality of a haircut depends on the groomer, not on whether they work in a van or a shop. What changes is attention: in a van, your groomer works on your pet from start to finish, without juggling several dogs at once.
When a salon might suit you better
- You want the lowest price per visit and transport isn't a problem.
- Your dog is relaxed around other dogs and doesn't mind waiting.
- You live outside the area a mobile service covers.
When mobile grooming is usually the better fit
- Your pet is anxious, reactive around other animals or hates the car.
- Your pet is a senior or has mobility issues.
- You have a cat. Most cats are much calmer without barking dogs nearby.
- Your schedule makes drop-off and pick-up hard.
- You have more than one pet and want them all done in one visit.
